METALLIC CHARACTER OF SODIUM
Metallic character is the chemical properties of metal elements, which is determined by the level of difficulty in losing their electrons.
Going across the periodic table from left to right, metallic character decreases. This is because atoms are more accepting of gaining electrons to fill their valence shell.
Going down the periodic table from top to bottom, metallic character increases. This is because it becomes easier to lose an electron as atomic radius increases (less attraction to the nucleus due to the increased distance in between).
Sodium is located in group 1, on the very left side of the periodic table, meaning it is part of the family of Alkali metals. Since it is a metal, that means sodium is shiny, ductile, malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Alkali metals lose electrons easily and do not require a lot of energy to do it because they have only one valence electron, meaning it has a large radii and low ionization energy. Alkali metals are highly reactive and have very low melting points.

How to predict characteristics of elements knowing the characteristics of another element in the same family?
All elements have unique properties. However, we are able to predict the characteristics of the elements if we are aware of a different element's characteristics from the same family. Characteristics of Helium from the family Noble gases:
Knowing that Helium has these characteristics, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, and Radon should as well because these elements are all from the Noble gases family. |
